HOLLINS, Va. – The Washington and Lee equestrian team tied for third place out of 13 teams at the Hollins IHSA Invitational on Saturday.
Hollins won the event with a total of 36 points and Bridgewater placed second with 33 markers. W&L and Emory & Henry tied for third, each finishing with 32 points. University of Virginia and Sweet Briar rounded out the Top 5 (23 points).
The Generals had nine Top 3 showings, with juniors Caleigh Wells (Calabasas, Calif. / Louisville) and Isabelle McAlevey (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) and first-year Charlotte Hereford (Staunton, Va. / Stuart Hall School) all earning first-place finishes in events.
Wells claimed the open equitation over fences and took third place in the intermediate equitation on the flat. McAlevey won the walk-trot equitation on the flat, while Hereford topped the leaderboard in the advanced walk-trot-canter equitation on the flat.
Juniors Jenny Lee (Ellicott City, Md. / Centennial) and Laurel Romano (Milford, Ohio / Saint Ursula Academy) had second-place finishes in events. Romano finished second in the novice equitation on the flat and Lee took second in the advanced walk-trot-canter equitation on the flat.
In the intermediate equitation on the flat, sophomore Jane Chiavelli (Ashland, Mass. / St. Mark's School) earned second, while sophomore Bryce Zaremby (Norwalk, Conn. / Brien McMahon) placed second in the walk-trot equitation on the flat event.
First-year Elise George (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) also added a second-place finish in the intermediate equitation over fences.
W&L currently ranks second in the Regional Team Standings with 63 points, right behind Bridgewater (64).
The Generals return to action on October 31, when they compete at the Bridgewater IHSA Invitational.
