W&L Field Hockey Suffers 2-1 Loss at Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — After falling behind, 2-0, the Washington and Lee field hockey team could only get within one in a 2-1 defeat at Wilson on Saturday. The loss dropped the Generals to 3-5 overall, while the Phoenix improved to 4-5.

Wilson scored the first goal of the game just 2:30 into the first. Senior forward Maggie Sipps recorded the goal off an assist from junior midfielder Megan Schneck. It was the only score in the opening half.

Sipps gave the Phoenix a 2-0 lead with 28:31 left in the contest for her second goal. Sophomore forward Hillary Swartz recorded the assist on the score. The Generals cut the lead in half with 12:36 left. Junior midfielder Iziar Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) passed to sophomore midfielder Anna Kathryn Barnes (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) who stuffed it in the goal. It marked the second score of the year for Barnes and the first assist for Moure.

First-year goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) played the first 16:24 for W&L, while senior goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) played the final 53:36. Kyne finished with four saves. The Phoenix led in shots, 15-4, and penalty corners, 12-3.

The Generals return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, October 3, when they travel to Lynchburg.
