Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) stopped a career-best
20 shots and senior attackman Scott Meehan
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) totaled a career-high
five goals and two assists as the sixth-seeded Washington and Lee
men's lacrosse team knocked off second-seeded Roanoke, 13-8, in the
semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Kerr
Stadium.
The teams finished the first quarter knotted at 3-3, but the
Generals (10-8) scored five goals in the second period, including
four by Meehan, to carry an 8-6 lead into halftime.
Meehan began the second quarter scoring at the 11:40 mark when
he found the net man-up off an assist from first-year attackman Cameron
Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy). Dabir
then found Meehan for a man-up goal at 9:39 for a 5-3 lead.
Roanoke (11-4) pulled to within 5-4 on a goal by senior
attackman Joey Coretti off an assist from junior attackman Conner
DuBois at 8:08, but Meehan scored from junior midfielder Cooper Brown
(Baltimore, Md./Gilman) for a 6-4 W&L lead just 29 seconds
later. Senior attackman Jeff Keating scored unassisted at
6:01 to pull Roanoke within 6-5, but Meehan scored from sophomore
midfielder Jared
Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) at 5:54 and first-year
midfielder Garrett
Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) scored unassisted at 4:48 for
an 8-5 lead. The Maroons added a Keating goal with 1:00 left
in the half for the 8-6 score at the break.
Berenis heated up in the third quarter, posting six saves as the
Generals held Roanoke scoreless during the third period.
Paglia scored from Meehan at 8:27 and Dabir found rope unassisted
at 3:18 for a 10-6 lead entering the final 15 minutes of play.
Means began the final quarter with a goal off an assist from
Brown just 14 seconds in, but senior attackman Reid Mayberry beat
Berenis just five seconds later to make it 11-7 with 14:41 to
play. Dabir then scored from Meehan with 9:17 left and junior
midfielder Luke
Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) scored
unassisted with 4:54 left for a 13-7 lead.
Roanoke tacked on a goal with 31 seconds remaining, but Berenis
turned back seven shots in the final quarter to send the Generals
to the ODAC Championship game for the first time since 2009.
Meehan's offensive effort was supported by three goals from
Paglia, and two goals and two assists from Dabir. Means
notched two goals, while Brown tallied a pair of assists.
Keating led Roanoke with three goals, while junior attackman
Richard Lachlan notched two goals and one assist. Coretti
added a pair of goals, and junior Mike Hardon and sophomore Charles
Pease both played in goal for the Maroons. Hardon logged six
saves with eight goals allowed in 41:07, while Pease played 18:53
and made two saves with five goals allowed.
Washington and Lee will advance to the ODAC Championship game
which will be held on Saturday or Sunday against either top-seeded
Lynchburg College or fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan. Those
two teams meet in the other semifinal on Saturday evening.
