Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Sixth-seeded Washington and Lee
built a 6-2 second quarter lead and held on for a 9-8 win over
third-seeded Hampden-Sydney in the quarterfinals of the ODAC men's
lacrosse tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Everett Stadium.
The Generals (9-8) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a pair of goals
by first-year midfielder Garrett
Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) and a tally by junior
midfielder Jack Switala
(Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) in the opening 15:48 of the
game.
Hampden-Sydney notched a pair of scores around a single tally by
junior midfielder Luke
Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) to make it a
4-2 game at 9:47 of the second quarter. W&L then scored
goals 24 seconds apart for a 6-2 lead with 8:23 left in the
half. First-year attackman Cameron
Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) completed a
transition opportunity from senior midfielder Logan Allen
(Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) at 8:47 and senior midfielder Sam Mott
(Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) scored man-up from
junior attackman Mac Means
(Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy).
The Tigers (9-7) were limited to just seven shots in the first
half, but managed a third goal before the break when senior
attackman Micah Keller scored unassisted with 26 seconds
remaining.
Keller's goal was the first in a five-goal rally that gave
Hampden-Sydney a 7-6 lead with 2:18 left in the third
quarter. Senior attackman Ben Clarke scored twice and senior
midfielder Carter Mavromatis assisted on all four Tiger goals in
the third quarter.
W&L found rope for the first time in the second half when
first-year attackman Cam Lewis
(Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) scored unassisted at 0:42 to tie
the game at 7-7.
Lewis' goal jump started the Generals' offense which scored
twice in the opening 3:39 of the fourth quarter for a 9-7
lead. Switala scored man-up from senior attackman Scott Meehan
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) at 12:07 and Lewis added
a second goal at 11:21 for the two-goal lead.
Clarke scored for H-SC with 5:02 left to bring the Tigers within
a goal (9-8), but the Generals held the ball for much of the final
five minutes and ran out the clock for the victory.
Paglia, Switala and Lewis all scored two goals to lead the
W&L offense. Meehan chipped in a pair of assists, while
first-year goalkeeper Warren
Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) stopped five shots in
60 minutes between the pipes.
Clarke paced the Tigers with four goals, while Mavromatis
notched four assists. Keller added two goals and sophomore
attackman Eric Gorsline tallied two assists. Junior Cody
Hornung played the first 58:47 in goal and recorded seven saves,
including a pair of point-blank stops in the final six minutes that
kept the H-SC hopes alive.
Washington and Lee will now travel to Salem, Va., for the
semifinals on Saturday. The Generals will take on
second-seeded Roanoke at 2:00 pm.
