Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to a 6-1
lead and never looked back in claiming a 10-5 victory over
Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday
afternoon at Wilson Field.
Neither team found the goal until 6:19 remained in the first
period when the Marlins (9-5, 3-3) went on a three-goal run over a
span of 1:44. VWC opened the scoring with a goal by sophomore
attackman Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) off an assist
from junior attackman Andrew Adamson (Marriottsville, Md./Mt. St.
Joseph). Senior attackman Adam Nycz (East Aurora,
N.Y./Iroquois) then scored off a feed from senior midfielder Travis
Puls (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) 52 seconds later, and
first-year attackman Chad Kooser (Ferndale, Md./North County)
scored unassisted at 4:35 for a 3-0 Marlins' lead.
W&L (6-8, 2-4) dented the scoreboard at 3:51 when first-year
attackman Cameron
Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) scored
unassisted, but the Marlins tacked on three more scores for a 6-1
lead with 11:25 left in the half.
Sophomore midfielder Garrett
Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) found rope off an assist from
junior midfielder Luke
Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) at 6:07 for
W&L, but VWC senior midfielder Kyle Wright (Horseheads,
N.Y./Horseheads) scored with 50 seconds left for a 7-2 Marlins'
lead at the break.
The two teams exchanged three goals apiece over the final 30
minutes, including a second goal by Dabir and single tallies by
junior midfielder Cooper Brown
(Baltimore, Md./Gilman) and junior attackman Mac Means
(Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy), as the Marlins held on for
their second straight win in the series.
Dabir's two scores led W&L's offense, while sophomore
midfielder Jared
Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) won 11-of-17 faceoffs
and recorded an assist. First-year Warren
Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) stopped a career-best
15 shots in 60 minutes between the pipes.
Puls paced Virginia Wesleyan with two goals and three
assists. Nycz totaled two goals and one assist, while Pappas
had two tallies as well. Junior goalkeeper Corey Bauer
(Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) recorded a game-high 16 saves for
VWC, including eight in the fourth quarter.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it
travels to Greensboro College for a 3:30 pm contest.
