LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sixth-ranked Lynchburg College scored nine straight goals over the first and second periods en route to a 12-4 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.

The two teams traded several goals over the first 3:56 of the game for a 2-2 score with 11:04 left in the first period. W&L received tallies from sophomore midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) and junior midfielder George Brooke (Berwyn, Pa./Haverford School), while Lynchburg posted goals from senior midfielder Andrew Wilfong and senior attackman Dylan Hoff.

Neither team scored over the next five minutes and change before the Hornets (8-1, 2-0) assumed control with their scoring run. Hoff started things with a goal off a feed from junior attackman Max Voumard at the 5:12 mark of the first quarter and scored three more times during the run.  Senior attackman Ben Sauer scored twice during the decisive surge for an 11-2 Lynchburg lead at the break.

The Generals (5-5, 1-2) received a man-up goal from senior attackman Scott Meehan (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) with 10:47 left in the third period, but another LC goal gave the Hornets a 12-3 lead entering the final quarter of play. W&L added a final goal with 11:17 left in the game as sophomore midfielder Jack Reuter (Rockville Center, N.Y./Chaminade) found the net unassisted.

For the game, W&L held a 34-33 edge in shots and a 10-7 advantage on faceoffs. The Hornets won the ground ball battle, 29-23.

Wood, Reuter, Meehan and Brooke all scored single tallies for W&L, while senior midfielder Sam Mott (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) notched one assist. Sophomore Patrick Jennings (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin) and first-year Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) both saw time in goal for the Generals. Jennings played the first 24:28 and had three saves with 11 goals-allowed. Berenis played the final 35:32, allowing just one goal with five saves.

Hoff paced the Hornets with five goals, while Wilfong had three goals and two assists. Sauer logged two scores, and junior attackman Pat Ohrem added one goal and two assists. Senior goalkeeper Franc Cook saw action for 57:22 in goal, making 10 saves with four goals-against, while senior Roland St. Clair-Barrie played the final 2:38 and did not face a shot on goal.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Williams College for a 3:30 pm contest.
