Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Hampden-Sydney scored three unanswered
goals in the final 5:05 of the game to post an 11-9 win over
Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday
afternoon at Wilson Field.
The game was tied eight times, but the Generals (4-4, 0-1) did
not trail in the second half until the Tigers' (3-3, 1-0)
game-ending run.
H-SC tied the game at 8-8 on a goal by senior attackman Micah
Keller (Richmond, Va./Christchurch) with 11:11 remaining, but
W&L grabbed the lead back just 15 seconds later when first-year
attackman Cameron
Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) scored off an
assist from junior midfielder Cooper Brown
(Baltimore, Md./Gilman).
The Tigers began their late surge with an unassisted goal by
sophomore midfielder Eric Gorsline (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk
Academy) with 5:05 left and took the lead when first-year
midfielder Corey Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) hooked
up with senior midfielder Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach,
Va./Cape Henry) for a goal at the 2:31 mark. Junior
midfielder Jess Hawthorne (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) capped the
scoring on an empty-netter with 1:16 remaining.
Neither team led by more than one goal in the first half as the
teams entered the break knotted at 4-4. W&L opened the
second half with two goals in the opening 3:03 to stretch out to a
two-goal lead with 11:57 left in the third period. Senior
attackman Scott Meehan
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) found junior attackman Mac Means
(Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) for both goals. The Tigers
then notched a pair of tallies of their own to tie the game at 6-6
by the 4:17 mark of the penultimate quarter.
Washington and Lee controlled play for much of the game,
out-shooting the Tigers, 40-23, and holding a 33-20 advantage on
ground balls. The Generals also won 17-of-24 faceoffs behind
the play of sophomore midfielder Jared
Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), who took every draw
for W&L.
Means registered three goals and two assists, while Meehan had
one goal and three assists. Dabir found the net three times
as well. Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick
Jennings (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin) played all 60 minutes
and recorded five saves.
Keller led Hampden-Sydney with three goals, while first-year
midfielder Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin)
notched two goals and one assist. Hawthorne and Gorsline
chipped in two goals apiece, and Carter Mavromatis had one goal and
two helpers. Junior Cody Hornung (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower
Merion) played the duration in goal and made 11 saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it
travels to Guilford for a 7:00 pm contest.
