Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The 15th-ranked Denison men's lacrosse
team used runs of seven goals and six goals to defeat Washington
and Lee, 15-9, on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
W&L (2-1) first-year midfielder Garrett
Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) tied the game at 1-1 when he
scored off an assist from first-year attackman Cameron
Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) with 5:20
left in the opening quarter, but the Big Red (2-0) started their
first run when senior attackman Corey Couture (Coronado,
Calif./Coronado) found the net unassisted with 10 seconds left in
the quarter.
The Denison run continued when senior midfielder Zach Walsh
(Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored off an assist from
Alex Hardt (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal) just 2:53 into the
second quarter and continued until Austin Campbell scored off a
Couture feed with 4:45 left in the first half. Hardt and
sophomore attackman Eddie Vita (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) both
scored twice during the seven-goal run that gave the Big Red an 8-1
advantage.
Paglia scored his second goal of the game off an assist from
first-year attackman Cam Lewis
(Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) with 1:59 left in the half, but
Vita struck for Denison with 12 seconds remaining for a 9-2
halftime lead.
Vita's goal was the first in a six-goal run that pushed the
Denison lead out to 14-2 with 13:58 remaining in the game.
The Generals put together a late run of six straight goals in
the final 10:53 of the game, featuring one goal and one assist by
junior attackman Mac Means
(Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) and a pair of assists from junior
midfielder Luke
Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant), but it was too little
too late as the Big Red walked away with the win.
Means led W&L with two goals and one assist, while Paglia
had two goals. Dabir tallied one goal and two assists, and
Heinsohn notched two assists. Sophomore Patrick
Jennings (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin) and first-year Warren
Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) both played in goal
for the Generals. Jennings posted seven saves with 13 goals
allowed in the opening 45 minutes, while Berenis had one save with
two goals-against in the final quarter.
Hardt led the Big Red with four goals and one assist, while
Walsh had four goals. Vita had three goals and two helpers, and
Couture logged two goals and three assists. Junior Nick
Petracca (Manhasset, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) played a majority of the
game in goal (57:07) and recorded nine saves with nine goals
allowed.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts
Washington College for a 1:00 pm contest.
