Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse
team held Christopher Newport scoreless for the final 38:43 of the
game in producing a 7-4 win on Saturday afternoon at Captains
Field.
Neither team scored in the second half of a penalty-filled game
that featured a combined 18 penalties for a total of 20
minutes.
Christopher Newport (0-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 53
seconds into the game on a goal by junior midfielder Kyle Pasta off
an assist from junior midfielder Chase Walton. However, the
Generals (2-0) used a 3-goal run to assume a 3-1 lead with 4:14
left in the quarter.
Senior midfielder Sam Mott (Grosse
Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) started the spurt with a man-up
goal at 11:55 off of an assist by junior attackman Mac Means
(Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy). The penalty was
non-releaseable and the Generals tallied another goal just 40
seconds later when junior midfielder Jack Switala
(Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) found the net off a feed
from first-year attackman Cameron
Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy).
First-year midfielder Garrett
Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) capped the run with a goal off
a Dabir helper with 4:14 left in the opening period.
Senior attackman John Glaser scored at 2:36 of the first quarter
and again man-up at 12:59 of the second quarter to knot the game at
3-3, but the Generals took the lead back just 1:52 later on a
Paglia goal off of a Switala assist.
The Captains again pulled even at 4-4 on an unassisted tally by
first-year midfielder Devin Bushweller at 8:43, but the Generals
took the lead for good when senior attackman Scott Meehan
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) scored man-up off another
Dabir assist. Mott scored at 4:56 for a two-goal lead and
Paglia capped the scoring with a man-up goal from Dabir with 1:59
left in the half for a 7-4 lead.
W&L played on defense for much of the second half, but
consistently killed CNU's man-up opportunities, including a two
minute non-releaseable penalty with 4:12 remaining in the
game. The Captains finished just 1-of-9 with the extra man,
while W&L was 4-for-9 while man-up.
Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick
Jennings (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin) turned away a number
of point-blank opportunities in the game, registering 10 saves
while playing all 60 minutes for the Generals. Paglia
finished with three goals, while Dabir had four assists. Mott
scored two goals and Switala had one goal and one assist.
Glaser led the Captains with two goals. Junior Andy
McGregor also played the duration in goal for CNU, making 12
saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on February 26 as it hosts
15th-ranked Denison for a 1:00 pm contest.
