Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse
team jumped out to a 5-0 lead following the first quarter and
cruised to an 11-3 win over Ferrum in the season-opener for both
teams on Tuesday evening at Wilson Field.
The Generals (1-0) got on the board just 52 seconds into the
game when senior attackman Scott Meehan
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) scored off a feed from
first-year midfielder Garrett
Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman). Paglia then fed senior
midfielder Sam Mott (Grosse
Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) for a man-up goal at the 8:08
mark, before scoring man-up himself off a feed from senior
attackman Mac Means
(Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) at 4:44.
The Generals' lead grew to 4-0 on a Meehan goal off an assist
from junior midfielder Jack Switala
(Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) just 24 seconds later and
Meehan scored again from sophomore midfielder Joe Wood
(Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) with 29 seconds left in the opening
period for the 5-0 lead.
Ferrum (0-1) registered its first goal at the 9:21 mark of the
second quarter when sophomore attackman Dylan Burdick (Stafford,
Va./Mountain View) scored man-up from sophomore midfielder Andrew
Gibeau (Spring, Texas/Klein), but W&L used three straight goals
to close the first half with an 8-1 lead.
Junior midfielder John
Rehberger (Vienna, Va./Flint Hill) extended the lead to 9-1
when he won the opening faceoff of the third quarter and scored 12
seconds into the frame and Switala scored unassisted at the 7:24
mark for a 10-1 lead. Burdick scored a pair of goals in the
fourth quarter for Ferrum, both assisted by sophomore attackman
Andrew Senft (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee), but the Panthers
could get no closer as Means ended the scoring with a goal off an
assist from Switala with 5:11 to play.
W&L held a 53-32 advantage in shots, 45-31 in ground balls
and 14-4 in faceoffs. Meehan led the Generals with three goals and
one assist, while Means had two goals and one helper. Paglia
and Switala posted one goal and two assists each and Wood had two
assists. Sophomore Patrick
Jennings (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin) played the duration in
goal, making nine saves.
Ferrum was paced by Burdick's three goals and two assists from
Senft. Junior Josh Liptak (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) played
all 60 minutes between the pipes, making 14 saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels
to Christopher Newport for a 1:00 pm contest.
