W&L Men's Lax Upsets No. 13 Hampden-Sydney, 9-8

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Washington and Lee scored four of the game's final five goals to produce a 9-8 victory over 13th-ranked Hampden-Sydney in men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon at Everett Stadium.

The Tigers (4-2, 0-1) opened a 6-3 lead following a three-goal run that concluded with 11:50 remaining in the second quarter.  The Generals cut it to a 6-4 game before halftime when junior attackman Sam Mott (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) scored man-up off an assist from sophomore attackman Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor).

W&L (4-4, 1-0) pulled within a single goal (6-5) following the break when sophomore attackman Will Garrett (Purcellville, Va./Highland School) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) at the 10:26 mark, but the Tigers pushed back to a two-goal advantage on a tally by first-year midfielder Bobby Fulton just 31 seconds later.

The Generals then began their game-closing run by scoring three-straight goals, including a pair by senior attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield), to take their first lead of the game at 8-7 with 11:00 remaining in the contest.

Hampden-Sydney knotted the game at 8-8 with 7:44 left on a goal by junior attackman Micah Keller off a feed from junior midfielder Carter Mavromatis, but junior attackman Scott Meehan (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) scored the game-winner unassisted for W&L with 5:41 remaining in the game.

Washington and Lee was paced by Means, who recorded two goals and one assist.  Daw and Mott had two goals apiece, while sophomore midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) registered a pair of assists.  Senior Jason Lumpkin (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) played the duration in goal and posted a career-high 14 saves.

Mavromatis and senior midfielder Cole Hawthorne led the Tigers with one goal and two assists each, while Keller and first-year attackman Eric Gorsline both tallied two goals.  Sophomore Cody Hornung recorded 10 saves in 60 minutes between the pipes.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Guilford for a 5:00 pm contest.
