Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The 18th-ranked and fourth-seeded
Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team used a seven-goal run
across the second, third and fourth periods to post a 12-6 victory
over fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinals of the ODAC
Tournament on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.
The game was knotted at 2-2 following the first period and
W&L (11-5) began its run on an unassisted man-up goal by senior
attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman), his 100th career
goal. Sophomore midfielder Luke Walter (Queenstown, Md./St.
Andrew's School) then scored off an assist from junior
midfielder Mark Wachtmeister (Wellesley, Mass./Belmont Hill) with
1:49 left in the second period to give W&L a 4-2 lead at the
break.
The run continued with four goals in the third quarter,
including a pair from first-year attackman Mac Means (Sewickley,
Pa./Sewickley Academy), for an 8-2 lead heading into the final
period. Keigler started the fourth quarter with another
unassisted tally at the 11:05 mark and the Generals cruised to the
six-goal victory.
For the game, Washington and Lee held a 52-14 advantage in shots
and a 40-16 edge in ground balls. The Generals also won
14-of-21 faceoffs and were successful on 15-of-16 clears.
Keigler led W&L with two goals and one assist to up his
career scoring total to 211 points (101 G, 110 A), good for sixth
on the school's all-time list. Means notched two goals
as did first-year attackman Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold
Spring Harbor). Wachtmeister had one goal and one assist,
while first-year midfielder Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville,
Va./Covenant School) chipped in a pair of assists. Senior
Matt Mason (Gladwyne, Pa./St. Mark's) played the duration in
goal and notched six saves.
Randolph-Macon (7-8) was paced by sophomore attackman Tyler
Midwinter (Hamilton, Ont./Barton Secondary), who totaled two goals
and one assist. Sophomore midfielder Patrick Egan (Annapolis,
Md./St. Mary's) posted two goals and senior midfielder Billy
Rowe (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) contributed four assists.
Junior goalkeeper Adam Liberto (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's)
stopped 22 shots between the pipes.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday as it travels to
top-seeded Roanoke College. A game time is to be determined.
