Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Hampden-Sydney jumped out to a 3-0 lead
and never looked back in claiming a 13-10 victory over 13th-ranked
Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday
evening at Wilson Field.
Sophomore attackman Micah Keller (Richmond, Va./Christchurch)
scored a pair of goals 52 seconds apart to give the Tigers a 2-0
lead at the 7:23 mark of the first period. Sophomore
attackman Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) added
another goal at the 5:29 mark for a 3-0 lead.
The Generals (8-3, 2-1) got on the board with 13 seconds
remaining in the opening period on a goal by junior midfielder Mark
Wachtmeister (Wellesley, Mass./Belmont Hill) off a feed from
first-year midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman), but the
Tigers scored three of the next four goals, including another by
Keller, to assume a 7-2 lead with 4:26 left in the half.
W&L then received goals from junior midfielder Drew Koeneman
(St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) and senior midfielder Logan Bartlett
(Summit, N.J./Pingry School) to close to within 7-4 at the break.
Each team would score two goals in the third period, but
Hampden-Sydney (6-3, 1-1) opened the fourth quarter by scoring four
of the first five goals to push out to a 13-7 lead with 4:55
remaining.
W&L would stage a late rally, scoring three goals in the
final 3:51, but could get no closer than the final margin.
The Generals held a 36-26 advantage in shots and a 32-30 edge in
ground balls. However, W&L was just 11-of-17 on clears
and committed 19 turnovers.
Bartlett led W&L with a career-high four goals, while senior
attackman Will Keigler and Koeneman each posted one goal and two
assists. Senior midfielder Max Mancuso (Northport,
N.Y./Northport) chipped in one goal and one helper. Senior
Matt Mason (Gladwyne, Pa./St. Mark's) played the first 53:04
in goal and surrendered 12 goals with four saves. Junior Ned
Lundvall (Richmond, Va./Gilman) played the final 6:56 and had one
save with one goal allowed.
Clarke paced the Tigers with four goals, while Keller had three
goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Kyle Jett (Suffolk,
Va./Nansemond Suffolk) registered two goals and one helper and
junior midfielder Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) added
one goal and two assists. Senior Mark Bagby (Boston,
Mass./Marshfield) played all 60 minutes in goal and logged seven
saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels
to Guilford College for a 1:00 pm contest.
