Box Score SALEM, Va. - Washington and Lee senior midfielder Harry St. John
(Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) scored unassisted just 38 seconds
into overtime to lift the 10th-ranked and third-seeded Generals to
a 15-14 overtime victory over top-ranked and No. 1 seed Roanoke
College in the finals of the ODAC men's lacrosse championship on
Sunday afternoon at Kerr Stadium.
For Washington and Lee, it is the first ODAC Championship since
2004 and the program's ninth conference championship overall.
The Generals (15-3) held a 14-11 lead with just over three minutes
to play in regulation when the Maroons (17-1) made a run to tie it
at 14-14. Pat March started the run when he scored off a Trey
Keeley feed with 3:08 left in regulation. Zach Thomas scored
unassisted at 2:47 and Jeff Keating scored man-up off an assist
from Thomas with 1:58 left to knot the score at 14-14.
Roanoke won the ensuing faceoff and appeared to win the game with
17 seconds remaining on a Joseph Coretti goal, but Coretti was
ruled to be in the crease and the Generals ran out the clock to
force the extra session. W&L won the faceoff to begin overtime
and St. John produced the game-winner in the fifth-straight contest
between the two teams that has been determined by one goal.
Roanoke jumped out to a 4-1 first quarter lead and held the
advantage until the Generals produced a five-goal run in the second
quarter to assume an 8-5 lead with 3:53 left in the first half.
Senior attackman Seth Fishman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford) scored a
pair of goals during the run, while St. John also found the net
twice.
Washington and Lee held the lead throughout the second stanza until
the Maroons run to close regulation that forced the second overtime
game between the teams this season. Roanoke won the regular-season
battle, 14-13, in overtime.
St. John led the Generals with four goals and two assists, while
Fishman had four goals. Junior attackman Will Keigler (Timonium,
Md./Gilman) totaled three goals and three assists and senior
goalkeeper Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St.
Agnes) played the duration in goal and notched 14 saves.
Matt Quinton led the Maroons with four goals, while Thomas notched
four goals and two assists. Brian Foley chipped in two goals and
Jake Dorsey played 56:53 in goal and posted nine saves.
Washington and Lee now receives the ODAC's automatic bid to the
NCAA Division III Tournament. The pairings will be announced later
this evening.
