LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team fell, 14-10, to Bridgewater on Friday afternoon on day two of the 2009 ODAC Baseball Championships at Lynchburg City Stadium.
The fourth-seeded Eagles (22-16) used an eight-run fifth inning and then withstood a late rally by the No. 6 Generals (19-13) to move on in the winner's bracket.
W&L scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning, including two on an error by Bridgewater second baseman Aaron Read, to tie the game, 3-3. However, BC came back with eight runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding 11-3 lead.
W&L managed to scored seven runs over the game's final two innings, including five in the ninth, but Bridgewater was able to hang on for the win.
Senior centerfielder
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) was one of three Generals to record three hits on the day as he finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Junior shortstop
John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) and junior third baseman
Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) were both 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
First-year righthander
Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) took the loss (1-2) as he allowed seven runs (four earned) on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout in four innings.
Bridgewater was led by its number four, five and six hitters as Michael Lenox, Mitchell Edwards and Drew Elkins combined to go 8-for-12 with six runs scored and six RBI. Casey Hartman improved to 5-2 on the year as he allowed nine runs (six earned) on 14 hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 8.1 innings.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday at 11:00 am against either No. 3 Randolph-Macon or No. 5 Hampden-Sydney.
