W&L Baseball Advances to ODAC Final with 6-1 Win Over HSC

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The sixth-seeded Washington and Lee baseball team advanced to the ODAC Championship game with a 6-1 victory over fifth-seeded Hampden-Sydney on Saturday night at Lynchburg City Stadium.

Junior righthander Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) threw eight strong innings and first-year C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bease) and sophomore rightfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) each had two base hits and a pair of RBI in leading the Generals to their third title-game appearance in the last seven years.

W&L (21-13) took a 3-0 lead in the third inning highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Thompson. The Generals stretched their lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning courtesy of a single from Cardona that plated a pair of runs.

Davidson allowed only one unearned run in the eighth inning as he won for the second time in the tournament and the sixth time this season (6-2). Davidson, who also pitched the Generals to a 4-1 win over top-seeded Lynchburg in the tournament's opener, allowed just six hits and one walk while striking out eight in eight innings of work. Senior righthander Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win.

Cardona finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Thompson was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two runs driven in. Junior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI and sophomore designated hitter Drew Dezen (Greenville, S.C./Greenville Senior) added two hits in four at-bats while scoring one run.

Mike Blanchard took the loss for the Tigers (20-18). He allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk in 5.1 innings while striking out five. A.J. Prill and Herbie Williams led the HSC offense as they were both 2-for-4 while Williams scored the lone Tiger run.

Washington and Lee will now face the winner of second seed Vriginia Welseyan vs. fifth seed Hampden-Sydney on Sunday at 4:00 pm., with the winner claiming the 2009 ODAC Baseball Championship.
