HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team swept an ODAC-doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon, taking game one, 5-2 in eight innings, before winning game two 11-5.
After EMU tied game one at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, W&L (17-11, 8-8 ODAC) tallied three runs in the top of the eighth inning to come away with the victory. Sophomore designated hitter
Drew Dezen (Greenville, S.C./Greenville Senior) broke the 2-2 tie with a two-run double before first-year outfielder
C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) added an insurance run with an RBI single. Dezen was 2-for-4 in game one with a run scored, two RBI and a pair of doubles. Senior centerfielder
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) was 1-for-2 with a run scored and sophomore rightfielder
Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Senior righthander
Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) picked up the win (3-2) as he tossed two innings of relief. Clark allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out three.
Junior Pat Crowe took the loss for the Royals (13-21, 6-12) as he surrendered three runs on four hits in just one-third of an inning. Sophomore outfielder Chris Harpine led EMU at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while sophomore outfielder Ben Wise added a hit in three at-bats with a run driven in.
The Generals rode a six-run eighth inning en route to the 11-5 win in game two. W&L sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth as it broke what had been a 5-5 tie. Dezen had an RBI single in the inning, while junior first baseman
Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) added an RBI double. W&L also managed a pair of unearned runs on a ball hit to centerfield.
Serenbetz finished game two a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, three runs scored and a homerun. Cardona and Dezen were 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. First-year
Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) picked up the win (2-1) with three innings of no-hit relief. Davis allowed just one walk and had two strikeouts.
First-year Andy Richter took the loss for the Royals as he gave up seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits with one walk and two strikeouts in seven innings of work. Sophomore junior shortstop Andrew Martin led EMU with a 1-for-3 showing at the plate. Martin drove in three runs and hit his fourth homerun of the season. Wise was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
W&L returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Guilford for a doubleheader that will determine the final spot in the ODAC Tournament. With the sweep of EMU, the Generals need only a split with Guilford to earn the final berth in the conference tournament. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
