GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team punched its ticket to the ODAC Tournament with a split against Guilford on Sunday afternoon at McBane field. W&L rallied to win game one, 10-7, before falling, 13-9, in the nightcap.
Needing only a split to advance to the postseason for the seventh-straight season, the Generals (18-12, 9-9 ODAC) rode three homeruns, including two by senior centerfielder
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) to earn the come-from-behind win in game one.
Trailing 7-5 in the top of the sixth inning, W&L tallied five runs, including four with two outs, to emerge with the three-run victory. McKelvey, the Generals' career leader in batting average, hit a two-out, two-run homerun to give W&L an 8-7 lead which was followed two batters later by another two-run homerun, this one by junior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) to account for the final margin.
McKelvey was a perfect 4-for-4 in game one and in addition to his game-winning homerun tallied a solo shot, a triple, scored four runs and stole a base. Junior shortstop
John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) was 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and one run driven in and sophomore designated hitter
Drew Dezen (Greenville, S.C./Greenville Senior) was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI.
Junior righthander
Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) picked up the win (4-2) as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits with one walk and one strikeout in five innings of work. Senior righthander
Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) picked up his second save of the season with two innings of perfect relief. Clark struck out three.
Guilford (18-19-1, 7-11) scored six runs combined in the third and fourth innings of game two en route to the four-run victory. Ditore was 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, Lewis was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and junior first baseman Hunter Serenbtez (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Sophomore righthander
Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) took the loss (2-2) as he allowed five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in three innings.
Washington and Lee will enter the 2009 ODAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and will face off against No. 1 seed Lynchburg (25-12, 14-4) on Thursday at 11:00 am at Lynchburg City Stadium.
