ASHLAND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped both games of an ODAC-doubleheader to Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field.
The Yellow Jackets (13-17, 8-6 ODAC) took game one, 7-3, before rallying in the ninth inning of game two to take a 6-4 decision from the Generals (14-9, 5-6).
Randolph-Macon scored four runs in the third inning of the opener to take a commanding 6-0 lead en route to the victory. The Generals were led by senior centerfielder
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), who batted 2-for-3 with a run scored in game one. Sophomore rightfielder
Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) was 3-for-4 at the plate, while junior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) and senior second baseman
Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret) both went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Junior righthander
Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started and took the loss (2-2) for W&L as he threw five innings of seven-hit ball, allowing seven runs and six walks, while striking out three.
The Yellow Jackets were led by first baseman Jeff Beck, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI. Outfielder Michael Wallace was 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored and a homerun. James Bierlein earned the win as he tossed 6.2 innings of three-run ball. He allowed 10 hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts.
In game two, Randolph-Macon won, 6-4, on a walk-off two-run homerun by first baseman Charlie Hartt. RMC had tied the game at 4-4 with a single run in the seventh inning to set up Hartt's game-winning blast.
McKelvey again led the Generals as he finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. Lewis and junior first baseman
Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) both finished 1-for-4 and both homered.
First-year righthander
Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) started for the Generals and allowed two runs on six hits and two walks in five innings of work. Senior righthander
Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season.
RMC was once again led by Wallace as he finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and his second homerun of the day. Including his game-winning blast, Hartt was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Josh Ellwood earned the win with 0.2 innings of perfect relief.
W&L returns to action on Monday as it travels to Emory & Henry for a doubleheader. Game one is slated to start at 1:00 pm.
