HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team fell to Hampden-Sydney, 10-8, at Yank Bernier Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers (17-16, 9-7 ODAC) used a six-run seventh inning to tie the game at 8-8, before scoring two runs in the eighth inning to complete the comeback and earn a season split with W&L (14-10, 5-7).
The Generals staked senior righthander
Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) to a 6-2 lead after five innings of play. Senior centerfielder
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) drove in W&L's first run when he was hit by a pitch in the second inning and then added an RBI single in the fourth. Senior second baseman
Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret) had an RBI triple and also scored a run in the third inning on a groundout by junior third baseman
Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford).
In the seventh, W&L pushed the lead to 8-2 on back-to-back sacrifice flies by sophomore rightfielder
Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) and sophomore designated hitter
Drew Dezen (Greenville, S.C./Greenville Senior), before HSC began its rally.
Clark started for W&L and allowed seven runs (four earned) on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings. First-year righthander
Roger Strong (1-1) (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) relieved Clark and took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 1.2 innings of work.
McKelvey finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while junior first baseman
Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Peyster finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and four runs scored.
Shortstop Chris Martin led the Tigers as he was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Centerfielder Nick Price finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while leftfielder Luke Swiney was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs. Tyler Napier (1-1) earned the win as he threw three innings in relief of starter Mike Blanchard. Napier gave up two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
W&L returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Emory & Henry for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
