LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team fell, 5-4, to No. 24 Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
W&L (14-7) grabbed an early 1-0 lead when senior centerfielder
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored on an RBI single by junior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) in the first inning.
The Hornets (23-4) came back with a single tally in the third inning to make it 1-1 on an RBI groundout by Scott Lambert. SU took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI triple by Kevin Brashears and a bunt by Lambert that scored Brashears from third.
The Generals took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning courtesy of a two-run double by first-year outfielder
C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and a run-scoring single off the bat of senior first baseman
Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy). However, the Hornets tied the game in the seventh on a single by Jon Holcomb that scored Jasen Eberz and then took a 5-4 lead in the ninth when Holcomb drove in Eberz with a double.
Thompson led W&L at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lewis went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while McKelvey was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. First-year righthander
Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) started for W&L and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Sophomore reliever
Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) (2-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
At the plate, the Hornets were led by Eberz, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Greg Van Sickler added two hits in three at bats and Holcomb finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
W&L will now break for finals before returning to action on April 11, when it visits Randolph-Macon for a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
