Baseball vs. Westminster (Pa.)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team improved to 8-3 on the season with a double-header sweep of Westminster (Pa.) at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Sunday afternoon.

W&L won game one, 5-4, in eight innings and defeated the Titans, 7-2, in the nightcap.

In game one, Westminster (1-3) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to knot the game at 4-4 and force extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, senior second baseman Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret) singled home first-year outfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) to make a winner of junior righthander Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford). Plantholt (4-0) earned the win after allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief.

First-year Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) started for W&L and allowed three runs on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings. At the plate, Peyster was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while junior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored.

Donnie Kirkwood led the Titans as he went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Mike Williams was a perfect 3-for-3 and stole two bases. Righthander Scott Smith was saddled with the loss as he allowed one run on two hits and two walks in two innings of work.

In game two, the Generals jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings and cruised to the 7-2 victory.

Plantholt was 1-for-3 at the plate with a homerun and three RBI, while Peyster was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one run driven in. First-year lefty Pat Smith (Baskins Ridge, N.J./Ridge) earned his first career-win as he threw six solid innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

In game two, Nick Maiorano led Westminster as he went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run. Mike McCoy started for the Titans and took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over 2.1 innings of work.

The Generals return to action when they travel to Ferrum for a 3:00 pm game on Wednesday.
