LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee baseball team improved to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC by sweeping a double-header from Roanoke on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field. The Generals took game one by a score of 5-3, then notched a 6-0 victory in game two.
In the opener, junior righthander
Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) tossed six scoreless innings of three-hit ball to improve to 1-1 on the season. He struck out six batters and walked just two.
The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI ground out by junior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) then broke the game open with three runs in the second frame. Sophomore rightfielder
Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) had a two-run single in the inning, while junior shortstop
John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) notched an RBI single.
Roanoke responded with three runs to make it a 5-3 game in the top of the seventh inning keyed by a two-run double from junior centerfielder Noah Davidson (Salem, Va./Salem). However, sophomore righthander
Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) recorded the final out for his first save of the season.
Senior second baseman
Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret) went 4-for-4 at the dish to lead W&L, while Cardona was 3-for-3 with a homerun, two runs scored and three RBI.
Junior righthander Cody Kidd (Salem, Va./Glenvar) was saddled with the loss (1-3) after allowing 14 hits and five earned runs in six innings of work. Junior shortstop Graham Thacker (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) led the Maroons at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
In the nightcap, W&L jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on the strength of an RBI single by first-year centerfielder
Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and a sacrifice fly by Cardona. The Generals stretched the lead to 4-0 in the third inning following a leadoff double by senior designated hitter
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and a walk by Lewis. Junior third baseman
Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) then cleared the bases with a double for a 4-0 lead. W&L added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings en route to the win.
Senior righthander
Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. He tossed seven scoreless innings of six-hit ball, striking out six batters and walking two. McKelvey led the Generals at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, while Plantholt was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Decembrino finished 2-for-4 with one run batted in.
Davidson paced the Maroons (6-11, 1-4) in game two, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Junior righthander Chris Caputo (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody) pitched five innings to take the loss in game two. He allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits en route to falling to 3-1 on the season.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Bridgewater for a 3:30 pm contest.
