Baseball vs. Southern Virginia

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team scored four runs in the final two innings en route to defeating Southern Virginia, 5-2, at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Tuesday afternoon.

W&L erased a 2-1 deficit when it scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning and twice more in the bottom of the eighth inning in beating SVU for the third-consecutive time.

The Generals got on the board first when first-year outfielder Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) scored an unearned run following and SVU error in the fourth inning.

The Knights (13-8) responded and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. Second baseman Logan Mann walked and centerfielder Jake Johnson drove him in with a double. Johnson scored on a double by shortstop Justin Eggers to give the Southern Virginia the lead.

The Generals (10-4) took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning on an RBI single by junior third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated hitter Drew Dezen (Greenville, S.C./Greenville Senior). W&L scored twice more in the eighth on an RBI double by sophomore rightfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) and a run-scoring single by senior second baseman Byron Peyster (Washington D.C./Maret).

First-year righthander Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) picked up the win  for Washington and Lee as he threw three scoreless innings in relief. Strong (1-0) allowed just one hit and walked one batter in his three innings. Junior Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started for W&L and allowed two runs on five hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out five.

Cardona finished the day 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Johnson and Eggers both finished 2-for-4 for the Knights, while T.J. Whiting took the loss, surrendering two runs on one hit and a walk in 1.1 innings of work.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Bridgewater at 3:00 pm.
