LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team climbed out of an early 3-0 hole en route to defeating Bridgewater, 10-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Eagles (7-11, 2-3 ODAC) jumped out to and early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a couple of defensive miscues by the Generals. Back-to-back errors by W&L loaded the bases for BC senior leftfielder Michael Lenox (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland), who drove in two runs with a single. Sophomore third baseman Brett Howell (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) drove in another run when he reached on a fielders choice.
After plating one run in the bottom of the second inning to make it 3-1, W&L (11-4, 2-2) erupted for six runs in the third inning to take a commanding 7-3 lead. Junior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) drove in two runs with a double in the inning and junior third baseman
Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) added a two-run single.
Senior designated hitter
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) hit a two-run single as part of a three-run fourth inning that concluded the Generals scoring.
Sophomore righthander
Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) earned the win as he allowed five runs (three earned) in six innings of work. Laswell (2-0) gave up nine hits while walking two and striking out two. Senior righthander
Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) picked up a save as he threw three scoreless innings of relief. Clark allowed one hit and two walks with a strikeout.
McKelvey finished 3-for-5 on the day with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Lewis went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
For Bridgewater, Lenox finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while senior centerfielder Brad Buracker (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Senior righthander John Sinclair (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) took the loss for the Eagles as he surrendered 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and a walk in 3.1 innings.
Washington and Lee returns to action when it hosts Roanoke in an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 pm.
