W&L Drops Nailbiter to Hampden-Sydney, 6-5

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney scored five unanswered goals over the second and third quarters to come back from a 4-1 first-quarter deficit and post a 6-5 win over the 17th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in Hampden-Sydney, Va.

The 16th-ranked Tigers (10-2, 2-1) opened the scoring as Ryan Harrington scored off a feed from Andrew O'Shea at 12:16 in the first quarter, but the Generals responded with four goals to close out the initial quarter. H-SC began its comeback in the second quarter when two scores by Harrington at 4:48 and 2:14, respectively, cut the W&L advantage to 4-3 at the break.

Hampden-Sydney continued its rally in the third quarter with the game-tying score from Thomas Jennings at 13:38 and the go-ahead goal from Harrington at 10:40 in the third. Jennings found the back off the net again at the 3:54 mark of the third quarter to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead and a goal by junior attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) off an assist from senior midfielder Charlie Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) with 2:44 remaining in the third quarter wasn't enough to spark a complete Generals' comeback.

W&L (7-4, 2-1) was paced by Rider, who had one goal and one assist. Clarke added two helpers, while senior goalkeeper Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) stopped 14 would-be goals.

Harrington racked up four goals to lead H-SC, while Jennings registered two goals and one assist. Scott Russell played the entire game in goal, notching nine saves.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Guilford at 3:30 pm.
