VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Freshman attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) scored three goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 7-6 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
The Marlins (5-4, 0-3) jumped out to a 5-2 halftime lead on the strength of a pair of goals by Brett Morris and extended their advantage to 6-2 on a Drew Langis goal with 7:06 left in the third period.
The Generals (6-3, 2-0) began their comeback with 59 seconds remaining in the third quarter as sophomore midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) found the net unassisted. Keigler then tallied his first goal off a feed from senior midfielder Charlie Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) at the 7:39 mark of the fourth quarter and found the net unassisted at the 3:59 mark to slice the Marlins' lead to 6-5. St. John then tied the game with a goal off an assist from Clarke with 17 seconds left in regulation, setting up Keigler's game-winner that came off the opening faceoff of the overtime sesssion.
Keigler's three scores led W&L, while St. John netted two goals. Senior midfielder Charlie Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) added two helpers and senior Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) stopped 17 shots in goal.
VWC was paced by Morris and Langis, who each notched two scores. Maicin Dunk posted a trio of assists, while Tom Skartsiaris racked up 20 saves.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday as they travel across town to play VMI in the 20th Annual Lee-Jackson Lacrosse at 4:00 pm.
