SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore attackman Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) scored unassisted with just 7.4 seconds remaining to lift the Generals to a 14-13 win over 18th-ranked Roanoke in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Generals (4-3, 1-0) jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the second quarter on the strength of an illegal stick penalty that wiped out a Maroons' goal and led to W&L's first three goals of the game. Roanoke scored four of the game's next five goals, including a pair by Billy Cameron, to cut the Generals' advantage to 7-5 with 4:39 left before halftime. A goal by each team made the score 8-6 heading into the break.
W&L scored two of the first three goals of the third quarter to break out to a 10-7 lead at the 11:46 mark, but the Maroons responded with a four-goal run, including three goals by Jon Mason, to assume an 11-10 lead with 12:19 left in the contest. The Generals immediately responded, tying the game at 11-11 just 1:18 later on a man-up goal by Skeen off a feed from freshman attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman). W&L then re-assumed the lead at the 10:00 mark when junior attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) scored unassisted. A pair of Roanoke goals by Chaz Carlson sandwiched around a lone W&L tally from sophomore midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) tied the game at 13-13 with 2:03 left in the game, setting up Skeen's game-winner coming out of a W&L timeout.
Skeen registered a career-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Rider notched three goals and one assist, while Keigler posted a career-high four assists. Senior Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) played all 60 minutes in goal and made 11 saves.
Mason paced the Maroons (5-4, 0-1) with four goals and one assist. Carlson posted two goals and four assists, while Cameron notched three goals and one assist. Goalie Nick Peck started the game, but allowed two goals in the first 3:04 of the contest. He was relieved by Jake Dorsey, who posted 10 saves in the final 56:56.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts fifth-ranked Middlebury for a 3:30 pm contest.
