LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore attackman Seth Fishman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford) scored a career-high three goals, including the first two tallies of the game in leading the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 9-3 victory over York College on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (1-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 20:47 of the game on a pair of Fishman scores and two goals by senior midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy). The Spartans notched their first goal with 31 seconds left in the first half on an unassisted tally by junior attackman Paul Rudell (Lusby, Md./Patuxent), but the Generals made it an 8-1 game at the half as junior defenseman Spotty Robins (Richmond, Va./Woodberry Forest) found rope just seven seconds later.
Fishman scored W&L's lone goal of the second half, while Rudell added another score for the Spartans, who capped the scoring with an extra-man goal by senior attackman Brendan Hopkins (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) off a feed from Pat Van Middelem (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) with one second left in the contest.
Ryan added one assist to go with his two goals, while junior attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) and sophomore midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) notched one goal and one assist each. Senior Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) played the first 57:25 in goal, allowing just two goals and making 14 saves. Sophomore Alex Heaton (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) spelled him for the final 2:35.
Rudell paced the Spartans' (1-1) offense with two goals, while junior goalkeeper Matt Keeler (Morton, Pa./Ridley) led the defense with five saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts second-ranked Gettysburg for a 1:00 pm contest.
