SALEM, Va. – Top-seeded and third-ranked Roanoke outscored fourth-seeded Washington and Lee, 6-0, in the fourth period en route to a 16-9 victory over the Generals in the ODAC men's lacrosse tournament semifinals on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Va.
The Generals trailed 10-9 heading into the final period and began the quarter with an extra-man opportunity, but the Maroons (12-2) killed off the advantage and then junior attacker Jon Mason scored off an assist from senior midfielder Chris Keating to increase their lead to 11-9 just 1:20 into the quarter. Roanoke then tallied two goals in a span of 30 seconds to push its' advantage to 13-9 with 10:23 remaining en route to the seven-goal win.
The Maroons led 5-2 with 4:51 left in the second quarter on the strength of two goals each from Keating and sophomore attacker Zack Thomas. However, W&L pulled to within 5-3 on an unassisted tally by freshman midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) at the 2:50 mark, which started a five-goal barrage from the two teams in a span of 1:08. Generals' freshman midfielder Seldon Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) capped the spurt with an unassisted tally with 1:42 left in the quarter to tie the game at 6-6 heading into halftime.
Roanoke notched four of the first five goals in the third period, including a goal and an assist by Keating, to take a 10-7 lead with 3:54 left, but W&L got man-up goals by sophomore attacker Will Englehart (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) and junior midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) to cut the deficit to 10-9 heading into the final period.
The Generals were led by sophomore attacker Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate), who scored two goals. Clarke, St. John, Ryan and freshman attacker Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) all finished with one goal and one assist, while junior goalkeeper Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) played all 60 minutes and made 10 saves.
For the Maroons, Keating finished with three goals and two assists, while Mason and Thomas each had three goals and one assist. Senior Matt Madalon also played the entire game between the pipes and stopped four shots.
With the loss, Washington and Lee finished its' season with a 7-6 record. Roanoke moves on and will host second-seeded and fourth-ranked Lynchburg in the ODAC Championship game this weekend.
