LEXINGTON, Va. -- Fourth-ranked Roanoke outscored Washington and Lee 11-2 over the final 37:42 of the game in posting a 16-7 win over the Generals in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
W&L knotted the game at 5-5 with 11:58 remaining in the second quarter following an extra-man goal by sophomore attackman Will Englehart (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) off an assist from sophomore attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate). However, successive goals by sophomore midfielder Matt Duke (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and junior attackman Jon Mason (Orangeville, Ontario/Orangeville) gave the Maroons a 7-5 lead with 3:53 left in the half. The Generals (3-4, 0-2) sliced it to a 7-6 game on a goal by junior midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) off a feed from freshman midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) just 1:21 later, but the Maroons ended the half with an unassisted tally by senior midfielder Pat Hurley (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) with 23 seconds remaining in the half for an 8-6 lead at the break.
The Maroons began the second half man-up and converted on a goal by junior attackman Brendan Moore (Columbia, Md./Mt. Hebron) off an assist from senior midfielder Chris Keating (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) just 35 seconds into the third period. From that point, Roanoke outscored the Generals 7-1 over the remainder of the game for the nine-goal victory.
Rider led W&L with two goals and one assist, while Ryan tallied a pair of goals. St. John notched a pair of assists, while junior attackman Grant Martin (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) added one goal and one assist. Junior Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) stopped 11 shots, while allowing 15 goals in nearly 56 minutes in goal. Freshman midfielder Seldon Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) won 19-of-24 faceoffs for the Generals.
Roanoke was paced by Mason, who posted five goals. Keating had two goals and one assist, while Duke and Hurley had two goals each. Senior Matt Madalon (Darien, Conn./Darien) stopped 15 shots in 59 minutes in goal.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Guilford for a 4:00 pm contest.
