ASHLAND, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) scored three goals and assisted on two others to help lead Washington and Lee to a 12-7 win over Randolph-Macon in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Va.
Randolph-Macon (5-9, 0-6) jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead on the strength of two goals by sophomore attackman Paul Johnsen and a pair of assists by senior midfielder P.C. Johnsen. However, the Generals ended the opening period with three straight goals, including two by St. John, for a 4-3 advantage.
W&L (7-5, 3-3) then assumed control of the game by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 5-0 over the second quarter for a 9-3 lead at the break. After a goal by freshman attackman Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) off a feed from St. John just 3:45 into the third period gave W&L a 10-3 lead, Randolph-Macon made a run by tallying three of the game's next four goals to pull within 11-6 with 12:06 left in the game. However, the Yellow Jackets could get no closer than the five-goal margin.
Skeen and junior midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) supplemented St. John's effort with two goals and and one assist each. Junior attackman Grant Martin (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) notched one goal and one assist, while senior attackman Clark Finney (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) added a pair of assists. Junior Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) started in goal and made six saves in 52 minutes of action.
P.C. Johnsen finished with one goal and four assists for R-MC, while Paul Johnsen notched three goals. Sophomore attackman Peter LaPaglia added one goal and one assist, and junior Brian Vierheller posted 14 saves in 40 minutes between the pipes.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Roanoke College for an ODAC Tournament Semifinal contest. The game time is yet to be determined.
