LYNCHBURG, Va. – The fourth-ranked Lynchburg men's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final 56 seconds, including the game-winner by senior midfielder Brian Kemper with just five seconds left, to post an 11-10 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.
The Generals (3-3, 0-1) took a 10-9 lead with 6:03 left in the fourth quarter when junior midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) scored off an assist from freshman attacker Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson). W&L held the one-goal advantage until Hornets' sophomore attacker Johnny Black scored off a feed from Kemper with 56 seconds left to tie the game at 10-10, setting up Kemper's game-winning goal. W&L freshman midfielder Seldon Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) won the ensuing faceoff and had a chance to tie the game, but his shot bounced high and wide.
W&L led 4-3 after the first period on three goals by Skeen and one by Ryan and carried a 6-5 lead into halftime.
Lynchburg (7-0, 1-0) got a pair of unassisted goals by senior attacker A.J. Tinklepaugh in the third period, sandwiched around a W&L tally by Skeen off an assist from Ryan, to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Generals grabbed an 8-7 lead just 1:59 into the final period on an unassisted goal by junior goalkeeper Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton). Lalli threw a length of the field pass and it bounced over Hornets' sophomore goalkeeper Garrett Curran and into the back of the Lynchburg net. W&L increased its lead to 9-7 at the 11:45 mark when junior attacker Grant Martin (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) scored off a feed from senior attacker Clark Finney (Baltimore, Md./Gilman). However, Lynchburg then tied the game at 9-9 with 7:28 left in the period on a pair of unassisted goals by senior midfielders Scott McAlee and Ryan Quick.
W&L was led by Skeen, who finished with four goals and one assist. Ryan added two goals and an assist, while Lalli played all 60 minutes and made eight saves.
Tinklepaugh led the Hornets with three goals and an assist, while Black notched three markers. Curran also played the entire game and stopped 12 shots.
The Generals return to the field on Sun., Apr. 9 when they host No. 8 Roanoke at 1:30 pm.
