SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke junior goalie Matt Madalon made 18 saves, including 10 in the first quarter, to lift the fifth-ranked Maroons to a 10-1 win over 10th-ranked Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
W&L (7-2, 2-1) out-shot Roanoke 15-7 in the first period, but trailed 2-1 after the period thanks to Madalon's play in goal. The two teams played even in the first half, until Roanoke assumed control with a three-goal spurt in the final 2:48 of the second quarter. Junior midfielder Chris Keating led the charge with one goal and one assist during the stretch.
Leading 5-1 late in the third period, Roanoke (8-1, 3-0) began pulling away with a pair of goals in the final 3:44 of the third period and tacked on three more goals in the fourth stanza for the nine-goal victory.
Sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) scored the lone Generals' goal off an assist from senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) with 6:06 remaining in the first period. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) played the first 49:32 in goal, recording 10 saves. Senior Pat Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) played the final 10:28 in goal, posting one save.
Keating, sophomore attackman Jon Mason, senior attackman Tug Schroeder and senior midfielder Dan Reed each had two goals and one assist to lead the Maroons.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to VMI for a 4:00 pm game.
