W&L Baseball Falls To West Virginia Tech, 11-9

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior shortstop John Sullivan (Beckley, W.Va.) went 3-for-6 with a double, two runs, and two RBI to help lead the West Virginia Tech baseball team to an 11-9 victory over Washington and Lee on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Bears led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the second inning, but the Generals (27-13) took a 3-2 lead on a two-run single by sophomore second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oak Hill). West Virginia Tech responded with two runs in the third inning and then took a 9-3 lead by plating five runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore designated hitter Jacob Johnson (Huntington, W.Va.) smacked a two-run homerun in the frame.

W&L slowly chipped away at the six-run deficit with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. After the Bears scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to push their lead back to four runs at 10-6, the Generals notched three runs in the bottom of the inning to pull within 10-9. Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) connected on a two-run homerun and senior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) followed with a solo shot. However, West Virginia Tech scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single by senior first baseman Justin Lavender (East Bank, W.Va.).

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, senior left fielder Warren Hunter (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) walked and junior center fielder Dave Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, but Miller grounded into a double play to end the game.

McConnell finished 4-for-5 with two homeruns and four RBI, while Miller went 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI. Junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) batted 3-for-5 and scored a run. On the mound, freshman right hander Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) allowed seven runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts in three innings to take the loss (4-2).

For the Bears, Johnson went 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI and senior third baseman John Hanson (Charleston, W.Va.) went 3-for-4 with three runs. Senior right hander Paul Ferrell (Summerville, S.C.) pitched four innings and gave up five runs on eight hits to pick up the win, while freshman left hander Kyle McDowell (St. Petersburg, Fla.) threw a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

W&L returns to the field on Saturday, when it hosts St. Mary's (Md.). The game begins at 1:00 pm.
