Generals Turn Back Marlins, 8-4

NORFOLK, Va. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team scored four goals in the fourth quarter, including three in a span of 2:39, en route to an 8-4 victory over ODAC-foe Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.

The Marlins (2-10, 0-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on a pair of unassisted goals by junior attacker Dan Hofmeister. The Generals (8-3, 3-1) responded by scoring three straight goals in the second period to take a 3-2 lead into halftime. Sophomore midfielder Matt Arcati (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) notched a goal and an assist, while freshman attacker Will Englehart (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) tallied his first collegiate goal during the run.

Virginia Wesleyan tied the score at 3-3 at the 8:49 mark of the third period when Hofmeister scored his third goal of the day off an assist from senior midfielder Brendan Rooney. The two teams each scored another goal to make the score 4-4 heading into the fourth period.

Sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) scored off a feed from senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) to give W&L a 5-4 lead at the 10:43 mark of the fourth quarter that it wouldn't relinquish.

Ryan finished with two goals and an assist, while Englehart notched two goals. Arcati added a goal and two assists and sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) made 15 saves in goal.

Hofmeister led the Marlins with three goals and sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Sothoron stopped 11 shots.

The Generals return to the field on Wednesday when they host Guilford at 3:30 pm.
