VMI Ends Lee Jackson Losing Skid With a 12-4 Victory Over Generals

LEXINGTON, Va. -- VMI snapped a string of 16 consecutive losses to Washington and Lee with a 12-4 win over the Generals on Wednesday afternoon in the 18th-annual Lee Jackson Lacrosse Classic held at VMI's Alumni Field.

The Keydets (5-5) had last won the event during the 1988 season and faced a 1-0 deficit just 1:19 into the game as W&L junior midfielder Perrin Monroe (Washington, D.C./Phillips Exeter) scored unassisted. However, VMI bounced back with three straight goals for a 3-1 lead with 13:53 remaining in the second period. W&L senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored off an assist from senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) with 9:34 remaining in the half to cut the score to 3-2, but the Keydets closed the half with another three-goal run for a 6-2 lead at the break.

VMI added two more goals in the third period for an 8-2 lead, before W&L senior defenseman Eric Koch (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored unassisted at the 11:44 mark of the fourth period to make the score 8-3. Any momentum from the goal was short lived, however, as VMI's Will Collier scooped up a ground ball in front of the goal and fired it home just 1:23 later.

Murray led W&L with one goal and one assist, while Koch was named the W&L recipient of the Worrell-Fallon Award, presented to the game MVP from each team. Koch picked up three ground balls in addition to tallying one goal. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) played a majority of the time in goal, recording six saves.

Tony Cavalero was named the VMI recipient of the Worrell-Fallon Award after scoring two goals and winning 9-of-13 faceoffs. Collier led the Keydets with three goals and one assist. Robert Trimble notched three goals, while Kevin Hill and Gabe McCaig each notched one goal and two assists. Dan Frank played a majority of the game in goal for VMI, posting 10 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 1:00 pm contest.
