W&L Men's Lacrosse Upends Macon, 8-4

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Matt Arcati (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) posted four assists and senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) notched three goals to lead 10th-ranked Washington and Lee to an 8-4 win over Randolph-Macon in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Yellow Jackets (5-4, 1-1) opened the scoring with 5:15 left in the first quarter as junior midfielder P.C. Johnsen (Laurel, Md./Hammond) found the net unassisted. W&L (7-1, 2-0) responded with a goal by sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) off an assist by senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) with 47 seconds left in the quarter, and took the lead on a goal by Murray off a feed from Arcati with 11:53 left in the second quarter. The Generals then stretched their lead to 3-1 with 7:15 left in the half on a feed from Arcati to freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate).

Macon also opened the scoring in the second half as freshman attackman Paul Johnsen (Laurel, Md./Glenelg) found rope off an assist from freshman midfielder Jim Dress (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) at the 10:55 mark of the third period, but the Generals would go on to score the next two goals to assume a 5-2 lead with 7:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets closed to within 5-3 with 2:31 left in the period on a man-up goal by Paul Johnsen off a feed from junior midfielder Brendan Toone (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), but the Generals would score the game's next three tallies, two by Murray, for a commanding 8-3 lead with 8:43 remaining. R-MC ended the scoring on an unassisted goal by P.C. Johnsen off the ensuing faceoff.

Molinelli complemented Arcati and Murray for W&L by totaling one goal and a pair of assists, while Rider posted two scores. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) was again solid in goal, recording 16 saves in the victory.

Randolph-Macon was paced by P.C. Johnsen's two goals. Paul Johnsen and Dress each registered one goal and one assist. Sophomore Brian Vierheller (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) also played well in goal for the Yellow Jackets, recording 20 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on April 9 as it travels to Roanoke for a 1:00 pm contest.
