LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Matt Arcati (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored unassisted with 1:21 remaining to lift 10th-ranked Washington and Lee to a 5-4 win over 11th-ranked Lynchburg in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (6-1, 1-0) led 2-1 at halftime on a pair of goals by senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport), but the Hornets scored two straight goals to assume a 3-2 lead with 4:03 remaining in the third period. Freshman attackman Johnny Black (Timonium, Md./St. Paul's) scored off an assist from senior attackman Billy McCulloch (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson) at the 6:21 mark of the period, followed by an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Scott McAlee (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock).
W&L answered with an unassisted tally by senior midfielder Mike Baracco (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) with 43 seconds left in the third period to tie the game at 3-3. The Generals then took a 4-3 lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) off a feed from freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) with 7:46 remaining in the fourth period. The Hornets (5-2, 0-1) knotted the game at 4-4 on a goal by McAlee off an assist from McCulloch with 3:36 left, but Arcati notched the game-winner to give W&L its sixth one-goal win of the season.
Both goalies were stellar in net, with W&L sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) totaling 14 saves and Lynchburg freshman Garrett Curran (Hull, Mass./Tabor Academy) notching 12 stops.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Randolph-Macon for a 3:30 pm contest.
