LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) scored on a shoot-out goal to give the Washington and Lee field hockey team a 2-1 win over Juniata on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Eagles (8-8) got on the scoreboard at the 47:36 mark when senior defender Elise Zimmerman (Boiling Springs, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored off an assist from sophomore defender Leslie Stern (Felton, Pa./Red Lion). The Generals (12-5) evened the score at 1-1 at 58:36 on a penalty corner goal by senior midfielder Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends). Beall and sophomore midfielder Kendall Korte (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) assisted on the goal.
After the two teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods, Beall scored on W&L's first penalty stroke, which proved to be the game-winner.
W&L senior goalkeeper Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin) played the first 35 minutes and made two saves, while classmate Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) was between the posts for the final 65 minutes, and all through the penalty stroke period, and made six saves. Senior netminder Andrea Way (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union) played in entire game and stopped 13 shots for Juniata.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sat., Oct. 29 in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament at the W&L Turf Field. The opponent and time are still to be determined.
