Men's Lacrosse

W&L Wins Lee Jackson Game, 15-4

LEXINGTON, Va. — Washington and Lee used a string of eight-straight goals over the second and third periods to post a 15-4 win over neighboring Virginia Military Institute in the 17th Annual Lee-Jackson Lacrosse Classic on Wednesday evening at the W&L Turf Field.

W&L senior goalie Ansel Sanders (White Stone, Va./Woodberry Forest) and VMI sophomore midfielder Tony Cavalero (Annandale, Va./Annandale) were awarded the Worrell-Fallon Trophy as the game MVP's.

W&L (8-3) led just 3-2 with 11:41 to play in the second period before producing the eight-goal run. Senior attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) scored four goals during the stretch, while senior midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) added two goals during the run.

Fink led the Generals with four goals and two assists, while Martin tallied three goals. Junior attackmen Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) each totaled one goal and two assists. Sanders was stellar in goal, playing 49:58 and posting 12 saves against just three goals allowed. Freshman Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) and junior Pat Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) played the remaining10:02 in goal, totaling five saves.

VMI (0-8) was paced by sophomore attackman Robert Trimble (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), who posted two assists. Cavalero won 11-of-20 faceoffs and picked up nine ground balls. Junior Matt Hook (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and sophomore Dan Frank (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) both played in goal, combining for 12 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Virginia Wesleyan for a 1:30 pm contest. VMI also returns to action on Saturday, hosting Marist for a 1:00 pm contest.
