GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Tenth-ranked Gettysburg College scored in every quarter and held 12th-ranked Washington and Lee to just two goals as the Bullets downed the Generals, 6-2, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
The decision marks the fewest goals scored by a W&L team since the Generals (2-2) fell to Denison, 9-2, in 1995.
John O'Bannon gave Gettysburg (1-0) a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals, scoring with 2:28 left in the first quarter, and again with 11:14 left in the second quarter. Washington and Lee answered as senior Richard Williams (Wynnewood, Pa./Haverford) scored off an assist by senior Mark McLewee (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) with 7:14 remaining before halftime.
The Bullets scored again with 3:37 left before the break with an unassisted tally by Brian Pryor, but the Generals responded at 2:02 when senior Mike McNamara (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola) scored off an assist by freshman Matt Arcati (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spr. Hrbr.).
Gettysburg finished off the first-half scoring with another goal at 1:22, and added a goal in both the third and fourth quarters to finish the day's scoring.
Senior Ansel Sanders (White Stone, Va./Woodberry Forest) made 10 saves for W&L, while Pat Vaughan made 11 stops in the Bullets' net.
The Generals return to action on Sat., Mar. 13 when they travel to ninth-ranked Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
