W&L Men's Lax Defeats Lynchburg, 11-9

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Washington and Lee scored the final five goals of the game for an 11-9 win over Lynchburg in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (5-3, 1-0) led 5-4 at the half and extended their lead to 6-4 on an unassisted tally by senior midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) just 28 seconds into the third stanza. However, the Hornets (4-3, 0-1) would go on a five-goal run to take a 9-6 lead with 11:50 remaining in the contest. Brandon Childs and Billy McCulloch each tallied one goal and one assist during the run.

W&L responded with 9:07 remaining as junior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) scored unassisted and ignited the Generals' game-winning rally. Senior attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Mark McLewee (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) just 30 seconds after Murray's goal, then McLewee tied the game at 9-9 with a goal off a feed from junior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) at the 5:16 mark. Fink scored the game-winner at 4:03 remaining and sophomore midfielder Perrin Monroe (Washington, D.C./Phillips Exeter) capped the scoring with a tally with 3:46 left in the game.

The Generals were led by Fink, who scored four goals. McLewee totaled two goals and two assists, while Molinelli had two goals and one assist. Senior Ansel Sanders (White Stone, Va./Woodberry Forest) amassed six saves in goal. For the game, the Generals held advantages in shots (38-22), ground balls (36-24) and faceoffs (13-11).

The Hornets were led by Childs, who had two goals and one assist. Nick Braun made seven saves in goal.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Randolph-Macon for a 4:00 pm contest.
