LEXINGTON, Va. — Fourth-ranked Washington College outscored 10th-ranked Washington and Lee, 7-1, over the final 21 minutes of the game in defeating the Generals, 11-6, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Shoremen (2-0) jumped out to a 3-1 lead following the first quarter, but saw W&L (1-1) climb back to knot the game at 3-3 with 6:08 remaining in the first half. WAC assumed a 4-3 lead on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Stephen Berger (Columbia, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) with 3:14 left in the half, but the Generals knotted the game at 4-4 on an extra-man goal by senior midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) off a feed from junior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) just 45 seconds before halftime.
The Generals then took a 5-4 lead just 2:49 into the second half as Molinelli found the net off an assist by senior midfielder Mark McLewee (Timonium, Md./Dulaney). The Shoremen then evened the game at 5-5 on a man-up goal by sophomore attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) off an assist by Berger and proceeded to score the game's next three goals to assume an 8-5 lead heading into the final quarter. W&L pulled to within 8-6 on an unassisted tally by McLewee with 13:39 remaining, but the Shoremen scored the game's final three goals in emerging with the five-goal win.
W&L was led by Molinelli, who scored two goals and assisted on another. McLewee and Martin each tallied one goal and two assists, while senior Ansel Sanders (White Stone, Va./Woodberry Forest) notched 11 saves in goal.
Washington College was paced by Lane, who scored four goals. Senior midfielder Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, Fla./Hotchkiss) added two goals and two assists. Senior Richard Yost (Westminster, Md./St. Paul's) stopped nine shots in goal.
For the game, the Shoremen held a 33-25 advantage in shots, a 12-9 edge in faceoffs and a 33-27 advantage in ground balls.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts Lycoming for a 3:30 pm contest.
