Lynchburg Defeats W&L, 6-5, in OT in the ODAC Title Game

LEXINGTON, Va. — Lynchburg's Kevin Reinecke scored off an assist by Paul Venturella with nine seconds remaining in overtime to lift the third-seeded Hornets to a 6-5 win over Washington and Lee in the ODAC men's lacrosse tournament championship game. The win gave Lynchburg its first-ever ODAC Championship.

The game remained nip-and-tuck throughout as neither team led by more than one goal. The Generals (9-4) claimed a 3-2 halftime lead as junior midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scored unassisted with 9:01 remaining in the second period to break a 2-2 deadlock.

The Hornets (12-4) assumed a 4-3 lead with 2:33 remaining in the third period as Billy McCulloch and Reinecke found the net, but the Generals knotted the score at 4-4 heading into the final period as Martin again scored unassisted with 1:34 left in the period.

W&L struck first in the fourth period as junior attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) scored his second goal of the game with 12:47 remaining. The Hornets then scored the tying goal with 7:15 remaining as Joe Matta scored off an assist by Venturella.

Both teams had good scoring opportunities in the extra frame, but could not find rope until Reinecke's game-winner.

Reinecke led the Hornets with three goals, while McCulloch notched two scores. Venturella added a pair of assists. Nick Braun posted six saves in goal.

Martin and Fink led the W&L offense with a pair of goals each. Junior Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) notched 15 saves in net. Sanders, senior defenseman Matt Conners (Burke, Va./Robinson) and Martin were named to the all-tournament team.

For the game, Lynchburg held a 42-22 advantage in shots and 37-21 edge in ground balls.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it hosts Limestone for a 1:30 pm contest. The Generals will then wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
