Generals Defeat Virginia Wesleyan, 8-6

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 44-20, and held on for an 8-6 win over the Marlins on Saturday in Norfolk, Va. With the win, W&L earned the fourth seed in next week's ODAC Tournament.

The Generals (8-3, 4-2 ODAC) stormed out to a 4-1 lead in the first period behind two goals from junior attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall). However, the Marlins evened the score at 4-4 heading into the locker rooms as they held W&L scoreless in the second quarter.

Junior midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and sophomore attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) accounted for the third-quarter scoring with a goal apiece. Then, when sophomore attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) tallied with 10:42 to play in the fourth period, the Generals claimed a 7-4 lead.

But, the Marlins battled back, cutting the lead to 7-6 with 6:19 to play on Ryan Naftzinger's unassisted goal before Murray added an insurance goal off a pass from senior midfielder Rob Brown (Wilton, Conn./Wilton).

Fink and Murray paced W&L with two goals apiece. Junior Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) made six stops in goal.

Pacing VWC were Naftzinger and Jay Smith, who each notched two goals. Netminder Dustin Betthauser recorded 22 saves between the pipes.

W&L next begins tournament-play on Tuesday when it travels to top-seeded Hampden-Sydney. The game time has not yet been determined.
