LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored three goals and assisted on two others as Washington and Lee claimed a 9-8 win over VMI in the Lee-Jackson Lacrosse Classic on Tuesday evening at the W&L Turf Field.
Molinelli and VMI senior goalie Brian Ward (Novi, Mich./Novi) each received the Worrell-Fallon Award as the game MVP's.
The Generals (6-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter on the strength of two Molinelli goals. However, the Keydets (3-5) came back with five goals in the second quarter, two by junior attackman Leo McInerney (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus), and just one W&L goal knotted the score at 5-5 at the half.
W&L began the third quarter with a pair of goals to assume a 7-5 lead with 10:15 remaining in the period. The Generals did not trail from that point on as each team exchanged goals back and forth with VMI senior midfielder Brian Niven (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) scoring the final tally with 11:57 remaining in the fourth period.
Supplimenting Molinelli's effort for W&L was junior midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), who scored two goals. Junior Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) stopped seven shots in goal.
VMI was led by McInerney, who tallied two goals and two assists. Niven and sophomore midfielder Gabe McCaig (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West) each added a goal and an assist. Ward stopped 11 shots in goal, including five in a scoreless fourth quarter for the Generals.
Washington and Lee will now break for exams before returning to the field on Sat., Apr. 12 at Hampden-Sydney. The game is slated to faceoff at 1:00 pm.
