W&L Baseball Sweeps West Virginia Tech

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team took a doubleheader from West Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals (8-2) won the first game, 12-7, and the nightcap, 4-0.

In the first game, the Generals fell behind, 4-1, but rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 7-5 lead. Successive doubles by junior leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett), sophomore catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) and sophomore third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) accounted for the runs.

W&L junior pitcher Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) was the beneficiary of one run in the fourth and four more in the sixth inning as he upped his mark to 2-0 on the season. He allowed seven runs on nine hits in seven innings of work. Golden Bears' starter Eric Hunt (East Bank, W.Va.) was saddled with the loss after surrendering seven runs (five earned) on six hits in 2.1 innings.

In Game 2, junior pitcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) threw a complete-game shutout to improve to 2-0 on the year. The Golden Bears managed just four hits off of Mulhern, who also walked four and had four strike outs.
W&L struck for two runs in the first inning after senior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) led off with a walk. He then stole his W&L-record 41st career base and scored on senior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale's (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) single. Mulhern helped his cause by plating Littlehale with a double to center.

The Generals added one run apiece in the fourth and fifth inning for the final margin.

Starter Matt Boyd (Oak Hill, W.Va.) was tagged with the loss for West Virginia Tech after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits in four innings of work.

Offensively, W&L was led by Bausch, who went 2-for-5 with three runs and four RBI on the afternoon. Kagey was 3-for-5 with one RBI and three runs, while Littlehale went 2-for-7.

Centerfielder Brett Hodgen (Winfield, W.Va.) homered in the first game and was 1-for-6 with three RBI to pace the Golden Bears (3-3).

The Generals take the field next on Tuesday when they host Mount Aloysius in a 3:00 pm contest.
