Generals Upset Bullets, 10-9

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior midfielder Tommy Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) picked up a loose ball in front of the goal and found the back of the net with 31 seconds remaining to give fourth-ranked Washington and Lee a 10-9 win over second-ranked Gettysburg in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Bullets never led in the contest, but tied the game on three occasions in the second half. The final tie came on a goal by freshman attackman Chase Stewart (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) with 59 seconds remaining.

Following the Stewart goal, Melanson won the ensuing faceoff. The Generals lost possession, then Melanson regained it in front of the goal for the score.

W&L extended a 5-2 halftime lead to 6-2 with 6:18 remaining in the third period as junior midifielder Mark McLewee (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) scored off an assist from junior midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius). However, Gettysburg (1-1) scored the game's next four goals, two by Stewart, to knot the game at 6-6 with 28 seconds remaining in the third period. The Generals (3-0) then pushed back to 8-6 with 10:01 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Bullets would again tie the game at 8-8 and 9-9 setting up Melanson's game-winning goal.

W&L was led by junior attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall), who tallied one goal and four assists. McLewee scored three goals, while sophomore attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had two goals and one assist. Junior Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) stopped six shots in goal.

Stewart led the Bullets with five goals. Senior goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md./Loyola) stopped three shots between the pipes.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Sun., Mar. 16, as it hosts Franklin & Marshall for a 1:30 pm contest.
