LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team dropped its second game in two days as the Generals fell to Juniata, 2-1, in non-conference action on Saturday evening.
After battling the Eagles (9-5) through two overtime periods, W&L (4-6) saw the game slip away as Juniata outscored the Generals, 3-1, in penalty strokes.
Senior defender Dana Groff (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 47:50, but that lead was short lived as senior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) sank a pass from sophomore midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) at 58:09.
Sophomores Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in the W&L goal. Gelinas started and made two saves, while Harrison took over duties in the second and overtime periods. She made six saves.
Junior Mel Sappe' (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) and sophomore Andrea Way (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union) split time in the Juniata goal. Sappe' made four saves and Way made three saves.
The Generals return to action Tuesday, when they host Eastern Mennonite. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
